Our fall/winter vegetable garden has pretty much gone to seed so it's time to start preparing the soil for our spring garden. We thought we'd enlist the help of our girls and let them have a little garden party while doing some work for us at the same time.
We normally keep the chickens out of the garden with some netting so they were hesitant at first but quickly jumped in and went to town! We will let them work the soil for us for a few weeks with their pecking, scratching, and pooping. After they've had some time to nibble on them, we'll pull the old plants to make room for our spring plants.
Our baby chicks will be arriving in a few weeks so we figure this could be one last hurrah for the girls before they have to be nice and responsible again.
how wonderful are those pictures!!! I love this. what adorable chicks, too : )
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! I know they enjoyed that! The trick will be keeping them out of there once the spring garden is planted.
ReplyDeleteI wish they could come for a field trip over here. Maybe then I could actually grow something... :)
eeee! I am so excited for the chickies to arrive! Love the photos Grace, especially the one of Flo!! She is such a pretty girl...I think that is all I would call her, "Hey pretty girl!, oh, How's pretty girl today?" anyhow don't mind me... I just love that picture. Growing anything new in this year's spring garden?
ReplyDeleteI'm excited too, Ninali! The boys and I were talking about names today and so far we've got Cookie, Lottie, Mini, and Robot. I'm sure you can guess who came up with which names :)
ReplyDeleteLove love love this! I sent my chickens down to my in laws for the winter and I miss them so much! Allison looks out the window everyday and says, "Chickys??" We will be so happy to have them back in the spring. :)
ReplyDeleteThat was a great idea! The chickens probably think they are away on vacation! Any predictions on how the older chickens will behave once the new chicks come to town?
ReplyDeleteAngela, you must miss your girls so much! When does it warm up enough for you to get them back? Are you ordering any more this year?
ReplyDeleteI have no clue, Mia. I'm a little nervous as I've heard some horror stories on introducing a new flock to an existing flock. Fortunately, the girls don't have a really strong or aggressive pecking order since they free range. We're going to build a smaller coop for the newbies to live in once we move them outside until the OG's get used to seeing them around. :)
